The short version
This website sets no cookies, has no contact forms and asks you to create no account. There is nothing for you to consent to and no tracking of you as an individual.
Two pages offer interactive tools. The kidney food plan keeps everything in your browser's memory and stores nothing at all. The Kidney Checker saves the results you enter on your own device, so your trend is still there next time, and that copy never reaches us.
Who we are
This website is published by Lawrence Medical Ltd (registered in England and Wales, Company No. 08316952), trading as Herts Kidney Care, the private practice of Dr Christopher Lawrence, Consultant Nephrologist. Lawrence Medical Ltd is the data controller for this website.
Registered office: 6th Floor, 2 London Wall Place, London EC2Y 5AU.

What this notice does and does not cover
This notice covers the website: what happens when you browse these pages and use the free tools on them.
It does not cover the medical records created when you are seen as a patient. Clinical records are handled separately under Dr Lawrence's professional and legal duties as a doctor, and under the arrangements of the hospital where you are seen. If you have a question about your medical records, or you wish to make a request about them, please contact the practice directly using the email address above.
Information you give us
There are no forms, logins or accounts anywhere on this site. The only way to send us information through the site is to use the email address or telephone numbers listed on it.
If you email us, we receive your email address, your name if you give it, and whatever you write. We use it to answer you and to arrange care if that is what you are asking for, and we keep it for as long as is necessary for that purpose.
Please note that ordinary email is not a secure channel. We would encourage you to keep detailed clinical information out of email and to raise it in consultation instead.
Information collected automatically
Web server logs
This site is hosted on Netlify. As with any website, Netlify's servers necessarily receive and log technical details of each request in order to deliver the page to you, including your IP address, the time, the page requested and your browser and device type. This is used to serve the site, keep it secure and diagnose faults. Netlify acts as our processor under a data processing agreement, and the logs are held for a limited period before deletion.
Cookies
This website sets no cookies, on any page. That is why you are not asked to accept any. Nothing in the list of third parties below sets an advertising or cross-site tracking cookie on our pages either.
Analytics
The Kidney Checker page, and that page only, uses Plausible Analytics to count how much the tool is used. Plausible is a privacy-focused service that sets no cookies, does not collect personal data and does not follow you between websites.
In the interests of being complete: when a calculation is run, the Kidney Checker sends Plausible an anonymous event recording which CKD stage band the result fell into and whether the tool flagged a possible acute kidney injury. That is an aggregate count with no name, no numbers you entered and nothing that identifies you or your device. It exists so that Dr Lawrence can see whether the tool is useful, not to record anything about any individual.
What the tools store on your device
Kidney Checker
So that your readings and your eGFR trend are still there when you come back, the Kidney Checker saves what you enter in your own browser's local storage, under the name kidneyChecker_v1. That can include your age, sex, height, weight, creatinine results and their dates, your ACR and blood pressure, any previous readings you added, and the name you typed if you chose to enter one.
This is stored on your device only. It is never transmitted to us and we have no way of reading it. Because it does sit on the device, please bear it in mind on a shared or family computer. You can erase all of it at any time with the Reset button in the tool, or by clearing your browser's data for this site.
The page also registers a service worker, which stores a copy of the tool itself in your browser so that it still works if you lose your connection. This caches the page, not your results.
Kidney food plan
The food plan stores nothing whatsoever and loads nothing from any other company. It has its own privacy notice setting out the detail.
Third parties this site involves
Some pages load resources from other companies. When your browser fetches those, it necessarily reveals your IP address to them. None of them receives anything you type into our tools.
| Service | Where | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Netlify | Every page | Website hosting |
| Google Fonts | Home, Kidney Checker, Kidney Health Kit, Patient Diary notice | Supplies the typefaces used for the design |
| Cloudflare cdnjs | Kidney Checker | Supplies the charting library that draws your trend graph |
| Plausible Analytics | Kidney Checker | Cookieless, aggregate usage counts |
These providers operate internationally, so a transfer outside the UK may be involved. Where that is the case it takes place under the safeguards provided for in UK data protection law.
The kidney food plan deliberately uses none of the above, not even fonts.
Links to other organisations
The site links out to Doctify for appointment booking, to Spire Healthcare and Phoenix Hospital Group for the hospitals where Dr Lawrence consults, to the Apple App Store, to Amazon, and to charities and guideline bodies such as Kidney Care UK, the UK Kidney Association and NICE.
Once you follow a link, you are on that organisation's website and its own privacy policy governs what happens there. If you book through Doctify, Doctify is the controller of the booking details you give it, not us.
Amazon affiliate links
The Kidney Health Kit page uses Amazon affiliate links, as that page already states. If you click one, the link passes an identifier to Amazon so that any resulting purchase can be credited, and Dr Lawrence may receive a small commission at no extra cost to you. We are not told who clicked or what any individual bought.
The Patient Thread app
The Patient Thread and Patient Diary apps are published by Patient Thread Ltd, a subsidiary of Lawrence Medical Ltd and covered by its registration with the Information Commissioner's Office. The apps keep your health data on your own device and your personal iCloud account, and they have their own privacy policy.
Why we are allowed to process this
For the technical records needed to serve and secure the website, and for the aggregate usage counts described above, we rely on our legitimate interests in running a working, secure and useful website. For correspondence you start, we rely on legitimate interests and, where you are asking about care, on the bases that apply to the provision of healthcare.
We do not use your data for advertising, we do not profile you, and we do not sell or share it with anyone for their own purposes.
Your rights
Under the UK General Data Protection Regulation you have the right to ask us for a copy of the personal data we hold about you, to have it corrected or erased, to restrict or object to how we use it, and to have it transferred to someone else where that applies.
Much of what this notice describes involves no personal data held by us at all, so in many cases there will be nothing for us to give you. Where we do hold something, such as an email exchange, please contact us at info@hertskidneycare.co.uk and we will respond within one month.
If you are unhappy with how your personal data has been handled you may complain to the Information Commissioner's Office, the UK supervisory authority, at ico.org.uk or on 0303 123 1113. We would be grateful for the chance to put things right first.
Children
This website and its tools are written for adults. The Kidney Checker uses an equation that is not validated below the age of 18 and says so. Children and young people with kidney disease should be assessed by a paediatric kidney team.
Changes to this notice
If the site changes in a way that affects any of the above, this notice will be updated and republished here with a new date at the top. It is reviewed at least once a year.
