Who is responsible for this page

This notice covers the kidney food plan page only. The Patient Diary iOS app is published by a different company, Patient Thread Ltd, and has its own privacy policy.

What you type in

To build your plan, the page asks you for some or all of the following:

• Your age, sex, height and weight
• Whether you have diabetes
• Which dietary restrictions your kidney team has told you to follow, such as potassium, phosphate, salt or fluid
• Whether you have been given a protein target
• Which relevant medicines you take

Some of this is information about your health, which data protection law treats as a special category of personal data. That is precisely why the tool is built so that none of it ever reaches us.

Your answers are held only in your browser's temporary memory while the page is open. They are used solely to work out which advice and recipes to display. They are not transmitted over the internet, not written to your device's storage, and not visible to Herts Kidney Care, to Dr Lawrence, or to anyone else. We cannot see your answers or your plan, and we have no way to recover them.

Cookies and local storage

This page uses no cookies of any kind. It does not use local storage, session storage or any other method of saving information on your device. Because nothing is stored, there is no cookie banner and nothing for you to consent to or opt out of.

Analytics and tracking

There is no analytics, no tracking, no advertising and no profiling on this page. We do not count visits to it, and we do not know who has used it or what anyone entered.

Third-party content

Unusually for a web page, this one requests nothing from any other company while it loads. There are no third-party fonts, scripts, images or embedded content, so no other organisation learns that you visited.

Your plan does include links to recipes on BBC Good Food and to the Kidney Care UK Kidney Kitchen. These are ordinary links that open in a new tab. Nothing is sent to those sites unless you choose to click, and if you do, their own privacy policies apply to your visit. We receive no information about whether you clicked or what you looked at.

Web hosting and server logs

This website is hosted on Netlify. As with any website, in order to send the page to you Netlify's servers necessarily receive and log technical information about the request, including your IP address, the time of the request, the page requested and your browser type. This is standard for web hosting and is used to deliver the site, keep it secure and diagnose faults.

These logs are held by Netlify as our hosting provider under a data processing agreement, and are kept for a limited period before deletion. They record that a device requested a page. They do not contain any of the answers you typed into the food plan, because those answers never leave your browser.

Printing and saving your plan

The plan includes a button to print it or save it as a PDF. This is handled entirely by your own device and browser. Any file you create belongs to you and is stored wherever you choose to put it. If you save or print your plan, please remember that it contains information about your health, so treat it as you would any other health record.

Your rights

You have rights under the UK General Data Protection Regulation to access, correct, erase and restrict the use of personal data held about you, and to object to its processing.

Because we do not receive or hold anything you enter into the food plan, we hold no such records to give you, correct or delete. Deleting your own copy is simply a matter of closing the page or deleting any PDF you saved. If you wish to exercise your rights in relation to the server logs described above, or you have any other data protection question, please contact us using the details below.

If you are unhappy with how we have handled your personal data, you may complain to the Information Commissioner's Office, the UK supervisory authority, at ico.org.uk.

Children

This tool is written for adults living with chronic kidney disease and is not directed at children. Dietary advice for children with kidney disease is different and should always come from a paediatric kidney team.

Not a medical device

The food plan provides general information about food. It does not diagnose, monitor or treat any condition, it does not replace advice from your own kidney team, GP or dietitian, and it is not a medical device. It is mentioned here because people often ask what happens to health information they enter into online tools. The answer for this tool is that nothing happens to it, because it never leaves your device.

Changes to this notice

If the way this page works ever changes, this notice will be updated and republished at this address, with a new date at the top. The version above is reviewed at least once a year.
